Meet Paku

Breed: Husky Chihuahua

Barking from: New Plymouth

What's up dog?

We are a low-decile, predominantly maori kura in Waitara. We are in the Tetiawa iwi rohe. I started bringing my rescue dog Paku to school when I realised the positive impact she was having on our tamariki - some of whom have difficulties adapting to school, be it learning/emotional/behavioural and trauma amongst other difficulties.
Paku is always calm and tamariki are drawn to her. They often want to be in her presence, or they want to walk her along her favourite part of the school - the bike track.
As Paku is ageing, the tamariki are learning how to treat our kuia with respect, leaving her be if she wants to go and have a sleep or some space in my office.
They are learning we cant just run up and hug dogs tightly - and if they have ham sandwiches to keep the lid on lunchboxes!
Paku likes to roam and visit other areas of the school - the principals office is a fave, and under our office managers desk. She loves to greet visitors to our school.
Paku comes to school events - hāngi for Matariki, assemblies, staff hui. She not only calms the tamariki, but is sought out by other staff for a cuddle.
I always knew Paku never truely belonged to me. Being born and bred, I believe she relishes her space in our kura at Waitara. Its her kainga. I am her kaitiaki and love to watch her be a comfort to others.
